Triaxial Fluxgate Magnetometer Tester Project

Dated back to 2011 till late 2012, I was assigned a project named "Prometheus Triaxial Fluxgate Magnetometer Tester Software" as part of my industrial placement within the Research and Development Department of the organization.

My industrial placement project involved coding and implementation of Windows Forms (WinForms) application used to test a Fluxgate Magnetometer Device. A sensor device that is used in the second generation of directional drilling telemetry tools during the exploration phase. The sensor device is used to measure and record magnetic fields in three dimension in order to identify the location of the directional drilling tool during the drilling process.

The screen shots below displays the WinForms tester application before and after development and the apparatus used, for testing Fluxgate Magnetometer sensor, for data analysis and reporting.

Some of my role within the development team involved the following:

• Worked on software development life-cycle from coding and testing to troubleshooting, documenting and implementing Triaxial Fluxgate Magnetometer Tester Software.
• Assisted production engineers relating for the new features to be implemented for software under development.
• Assisted in monitoring the test results of the Fluxgate sensor devices for assuring the pass or fail criteria.
• Provided recommendations for programmatic implementations of test functions.
• Produced documentations for the test setup of the sensor device, as well as instructional guides and usage documentation for the new features implemented on the test program.
• Enhanced and improved the functionality of the existing test software.
• Modified and made amendments for the test software in order to increase the test process of the Triaxial Fluxgate Magnetometer devices. In which by the end of the assigned project - sensor device test capability increased from three devices to seven device being test simultaneously by the software.

Actions & Outcomes

The following were the main personal development that I have aimed at the beginning of my placement, and with the support that I have received by different people within my placement organization I have managed to accomplish the following outcomes:

• Learn C# programming language and improve my programming skills.
• Improved my performance on a given task.
• Develop interpersonal and communication skills.
• Gained an accrediated qualifications by Chartered Management Institute (CMI) & Engineering Development Trust (EDT) for my placement and bussiness course that I took.

Industrial placement give the opportunity to make a wise decision on the type of profession that I would like to pursue after gradation.
